Doing major home renovations and repairs is not something we do everyday. When it comes to finding a good contractor it helps to have some ground rules before you start looking. Here are a few tips to help you out.
1. Ask for referrals. The easiest way to find a good basement waterproofing contractor is to ask people you know. Have they had the same type of work done that you need to have done? Do they know someone they trust?
2. Get multiple quotes. Contact several contractors to come look at your problem. They should offer a free estimate for your use. If you get multiple estimates, they will most likely be all over the board. Don't just go with the cheapest. This could be a major mistake. At this point, just compare so you have an idea.
3. Contact references. If possible, you want to speak with previous customers to get their opinion of the contractor and their work. A reputable contractor won't have any problems giving you a list of satisfied customers to contact.
4. Proof of insurance and any necessary licenses. This is important for obvious reasons. If something bad happens while they are working on your home, you want to know that their insurance is going to cover it.
5. Get it in writing. A good contractor will give you an estimate in writing and will stick by it. They will also write out a detailed contract for the work to be done before they ever start. For their protection and yours.
